Ms. Vicinanza has received several awards for her poetry and her advocacy for the arts. She was a member of a folk music group in her early twenties and uses her vocal training in her performances of her poetry. She is a member for five years of the performance troupe Shijin (which in Japanese means female poet) and has been an editor for numerous literary magazines and single author collections of poetry. She was a member of two national slam teams and competed in National Slam Championship competitions in 1994 and 1996, as well as a member of the U.S. Team that competed in Sweden in 1997, and was the executive director of The 1997 National Poetry Slam Championships held in Middletown, CT. After a long absence from the poetry scene, Ms. Vicinanza is preparing for a month long tour of the United States as a member of Mother Tongue, three women (Elizabeth Thomas, Valerie Lawson and Faith Vicinanza) who have been performance poets for nearly four decades (in total) and were among a select few “legacy slam poets” featured at the “Women of the World Poetry Slam Championships” in Detroit early in 2008.
